1. Home Inspection and Load Calculation
The first step is for an HVAC technician to look at your home and determine how to outfit it with a cooling system. That includes a load calculation, which determines the correct size for your home. Bigger is not better: an oversized system short cycles and leaves the house feeling humid.
The technician will also assess your home's layout to decide where the equipment should go, what is needed for the refrigerant lines and ductwork, and which safety measures should be in place on installation day. Permits for equipment replacement are required by the local jurisdiction and vary by town.
2. Remove the Old Unit
If you currently have a central AC unit, the next step is to remove it. This requires special equipment, because releasing refrigerant into the air is both harmful and illegal. Once the refrigerant is safely recovered, the old wiring is disconnected and the unit is removed.
3. Prepare the Pad
The pad your outdoor unit rests on helps keep it level, which supports proper operation and helps protect it from damage. A good pad can also reduce vibration noise. Your technician will replace the old pad when needed.
4. Install Evaporator Coils and Refrigerant Lines
Before the outdoor unit is set, we install the indoor evaporator coil and the refrigerant lines that connect the two sides of the system.
5. Install the Outside Unit
We are now ready to install the central AC unit. Once it is in place, we install the filter drier and condensate drain line, complete the wiring and test the system to confirm everything is working correctly.
