Buzzing, rattling or squealing from your air conditioner? Learn what these three common AC sounds can mean and when to schedule a repair visit.

Even with a pre-season tune-up, your air conditioner can still develop problems during the hottest weeks of summer. You can spot malfunctions sooner when you know the common signs, and that often means recognizing unusual sounds and scheduling AC repair once you hear them.
Do not try to fix a problem that is causing your air conditioner to buzz loudly. Buzzing is often a sign of an electrical issue, such as a failing capacitor or contactor, loose or faulty wiring, or a circuit that is overloading. Electrical faults carry a risk of shock or fire, so this is a job for a trained technician.
Avoid running the system until the technician has completed the necessary repairs. A qualified technician can test the electrical components and replace the ones that have failed.
A rattling sound from your AC also deserves prompt attention. It often points to a loose blower wheel or a failing blower motor. It can also come from the condenser fan motor or loose panels on the outdoor unit.
A technician will find the exact cause of the sound and repair it. Delaying this kind of repair can cost more in the long run, because a worn part can eventually reduce the system's ability to move cool air into your living spaces.
A high-pitched squeal each time your AC runs can get annoying enough that you turn the system off. That is a sensible move for another reason, too. The sound can come from a worn motor bearing or, in some cases, from high pressure inside the outdoor compressor.
Running the system while pressure is building can damage the compressor and lead to much larger repairs. Turn the system off until a technician can diagnose the underlying problem.
